Cold-calling is a pest of modern salesmanship. I suppose that some mugs must fall for it, or the marketing people wouldn’t go in for it. But we must be patient with cold-callers. What a horrid way to earn a living. And their employment depends on persuading mugs like you and me to buy their disingenuous special prizes. We must remain patient and courteous. We must cut off the flow of sales waffle at the first opportunity. We may use their first name, if that is what they seem to want. “Jenny . . . Very kind . . .
