The Irish state’s most important agent inside the Real IRA at the time of the Omagh bomb should be compelled to give evidence at any future public inquiry, the families of victims have said.
Relatives say the Irish government should make Paddy Dixon available to any judicial investigation into the bombing as he was a garda informer within the Real IRA in the months leading up to the attack in August 1998, which left 29 dead.
On Friday a High Court judge in Belfast concluded there had been a “real prospect” of the bombing being prevented by the security forces. Mr Justice Horner said he could not compel the authorities in the Republic to hold a public inquiry but hoped they would.
After the ruling
