Result and rain

The tied one-day match at Lord’s on Saturday was a farce and left many spectators wondering what the result was

Sir, I was at Lord’s for the tied England v India match (report, Sport, Sept 12). A dramatic farce and I can think of no other sporting event where most of the spectators leave at the end (or where there is no realistic prospect of the game continuing) without knowing the result.

The Duckworth/Lewis method seems a fair way to decide the result where the weather intervenes, but had play resumed promptly after one of the short breaks for rain instead of announcing that it would restart ten minutes after the rain had stopped and the covers removed, the match would have finished with the full overs bowled.

I cannot believe that those ten minutes made any difference to the players’ safety.
