Samsung has unveiled a smartphone that can fold out into a tablet, becoming the first of the world’s technology giants to build what many hope will be the next revolution in mobile devices.

The South Korean conglomerate unveiled its foldable handset, called Galaxy Fold, at an event in San Francisco, California. The device starts as a smartphone with a normal 4.6in screen that can be folded out into a 7.3in tablet screen, opening up like a book or a map. Samsung expects to ship a million foldable devices this year.

Almost every mobile phone maker has been racing to design a successful foldable device, in the hope that it will rejuvenate consumers’ excitement in smartphones after a recent slowdown in demand.
