Save Abbey Road, National Trust urged

The National Trust may step in to save Abbey Road studios after they were put up for sale by EMI.

The celebrated recording studios in North London, which gave their name to a Beatles album, could be closed if they are sold. Hundreds of people have urged the trust to act. Yesterday Chris Evans used his show on Radio 2 to call for a rescue.

The National Trust said: “It’s not often that the public spontaneously suggests we acquire a building. Abbey Road studios appear to be very dear to the nation’s heart — to the extent that we will take soundings as to whether a campaign is desirable or even feasible.”

The trust plans to hold talks with Sir Paul McCartney about a rescue,
