Security scaled back in Rothbury as hunt for Raoul Moat goes on

When the people of Rothbury went to their beds last night, it was in a town under siege. Rain lashed down, hampering the police search for violent fugitive Raoul Moat, who is suspected to be camping nearby.

This morning, they awoke to clear skies, open roads and a greatly reduced police presence.

While marked cars still sat at strategic points around the edges of the town, most of the police tape was down and the unarmed officers seemed to outnumber their armed colleagues. While yesterday there was eerie silence, punctuated only by the drone of police helicopters, today there is purring traffic, chatter and the sound of construction workers building a new bridge over the River Coquet.
