When Shrek gets a second chance at life, his existential demons are a hoot proving there’s still life in the old formula

The combination of midlife crisis and unwanted celebrity can make anyone crabbit — the Scots for grumpy — and no one more so than your favourite Glaswegian-sounding ogre, Shrek. “Ah huv become a Jolly Green Joke,” he says candidly, in this fourth outing.

Although jaded folks have complained that Shrek Forever After 3-D rehashes tired gags and no longer has the oomph of nine years ago, when Shrek and Fiona waddled off into the sunset to the ironic strains of I’m a Believer, I emerged from the cinema with that warm feeling that comes after much snorting and giggling. As the poster puns, “It’s not ogre ’til it’s ogre”, and there is still life in the Shrek franchise.
