Proposals to ‘encourage’ students to live at home highlights Government’s inability to grasp the purpose of education

Sir, The latest proposal to “encourage” students to live at home by removing both fees and grants once again highlights the Government’s abysmal inability to grasp the real purpose of education (“Living off the bank of mum and dad: the students who swap loans for free tuition”, July 9).

Historically wars, heavy industry and National Service took young people, principally young men, and turned them from boys into men. They were either away from home or earning enough to offer partial independence and thus, through either route, matured into adults who made a contribution to society.
