Sure fire losers

Over the past two months, I have been putting my money where Today's mouth is by backing its racing tips. This has proved an expensive exercise, and my pockets now have large holes in them, metaphorically speaking. If I perform only one valuable service this year, it will be to discourage others from doing what I did.

I say this with no desire to spoil the programme's golden-jubilee celebrations later this month. I am (in the main) a friend of Radio 4's morning flagship. I still remember Prince Charles giving it his first broadcast interview in 1969 and talking about the cherry-brandy incident on Stornaway. I once wrote a whole book about this indispensable, if sometimes infuriating, dawn caucus, and am now setting quiz questions
