Tao Geoghegan Hart sustained a fracture of the left hip in the crash that caused him to abandon the Giro d’Italia.

The 28-year-old Briton, who was third in the general classification and only five seconds behind his team-mate Geraint Thomas, went down as a large group of riders rounded a slippery left-hand corner with about 70km of the 11th stage to go. Also involved were Thomas and Primoz Roglic, first and second in the standings ahead of Geoghegan Hart. They were able to return to their bikes and continue the race, but Geoghegan Hart was in distress and taken to a hospital in Genoa via ambulance. He requires surgery to fix the injury.
