David Beckham, the Duke of Westminster and the gambling entrepreneur Denise Coates are today named among 50 individuals and families who have together paid nearly £2bn of tax in a year.

The inaugural Sunday Times Tax List features self-made entrepreneurs, including a former market trader, a one-time plasterer and another who admits to having dabbled in petty crime, alongside the “old money” names of aristocratic inherited wealth.

The rankings of Britain’s 50 biggest payers of tax also includes Sir James Dyson, the Brexit-supporting billionaire inventor, who last week revealed plans to move his technology giant’s headquarters from Wiltshire to Singapore. He was accused by MPs of “rank hypocrisy”.
