Sir, The reporting of the semi-finals of the rugby World Cup, to which your paper has given much space, has been dominated by the sanctification of Jonny Wilkinson. This young man has had much to contend with, such as a succession of injuries and periods out of the game, without the extra pressure of being hailed now as the Saviour of England. Have we forgotten how Wales’s most gifted outside half, Barry John, gave up the game because of the hero worship to which he was subjected. There should be some limits to the press and public adulation of sportsmen, else St Jonny might feel the same way as King John.
