A giant scarecrow of the Pope in his Popemobile has won joint first prize in a competition.

The huge model of Pope Francis, who is due to visit Ireland this month, was created by a group of men in Durrow, Co Laois, for the town’s popular annual scarecrow festival.

Evelyn Clancy, chairwoman of the Durrow Development Forum, said the festival was popular across Ireland. The scarecrows usually have a topical theme, with past ones including Donald Trump and King Kong.

Ms Clancy added: “People expect it. King Kong was higher than a two-storey house, people have that expectation.”

Members of Conahy Vintage Club, including engineers and carpenters, put in hours of work in the evenings to create the Pope scarecrow.
