Phil Mickelson could only muster a disbelieving chuckle yesterday as he slipped from history-maker to ninth on a long list of 63 shot rounds at the Open.

The excitement of a low-scoring round may also be short lived as only one man has carded a 63 and gone on to win.

In 1977, Hayes shot a record 63 on his second round at Turnberry. The man from Oklahoma played a mesmerising round, blitzing the previous best. The record had been set at 65 in 1934. Hayes did not go on to win the championship, but he definitely put his name in the history books.
