Antony Blinken’s arrival in London for talks with the government before the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting today is a visible and welcome sign that the Biden administration is serious in its commitment to re-engage with America’s allies in substantive multilateral diplomacy. The US secretary of state comes with an agenda that chimes in with the priorities of his allies: the need for a united response to China’s increasingly assertive policies, a tougher stance towards Moscow over its brazen attempts to interfere in western democratic elections and a determination to rein in Iran’s nuclear ambitions by consent rather than confrontation.
