The Times view on charity contributions: Generous Readers

There is still time to donate to our Christmas charities

The Times
JON SUPER FOR THE SUNDAY TIMES

Though it is nearly a month on from the December festivities, we still have good cheer to spread. The Times and Sunday Times charity appeal has already raised almost £1.89 million for our three charities in the UK and abroad, and we can raise even more with your continued support. We must first thank our readers and matchers who have already contributed toward that vast sum. If you have not yet done so, it is not too late. Donations can be made until midnight on Wednesday, so you can beat the January blues and help our charities.

Whizz Kids is the country’s leading charity for young wheelchair users. More than 75,000 young people in the UK need to use a wheelchair and many cannot access the right equipment through local services. This splendidly named charity does what it says on the tin, helping young people become mobile by providing them with bespoke equipment and training.

Our second charity, Street Child, also supports young people, helping them access education safely in more than 20 countries around the world facing crises. It has done an unenviable job refurbishing schools and helping to train teachers in Ukraine over the past two years, and in Afghanistan it supports girls accessing education that would be otherwise denied to them. Your donations tangibly improve opportunity and will make a lasting impact on these young lives.

Helping to combat the shameful statistic that 4.7 million people in Britain were in food poverty in 2021-22, our final charity is Feeding Britain, which helps low-income families stretch their budgets and access healthy, nutritious food. Providing practical help to people on the breadline has been made more urgent by the cost of living crisis. Your donations will help. Thanks to your generosity we have a chance to break last year’s total. Please help us with one last push for those in dire need.
