Britain’s relationship with the United States is often the subject of hand-wringing on this side of the Atlantic. It was inevitable, then, that the visit of President Biden to Northern Ireland to mark the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday agreement would be scrutinised for clues as to his attitude to this country. The brevity of the visit, under a day, and the rapidity of his “bi-latte” meeting with Rishi Sunak was contrasted unfavourably with his two-night visit to the Republic of Ireland, where he is exploring his family roots. Absurdly, the White House was forced to confirm that the president is not “anti-British.”

Mr Biden may not harbour a deep affection for this country but he is presumably aware that in an uncertain world
