This is what I do

Dr Peter Prendergast, aesthetic doctor

I think being an aesthetic doctor is an artistic skill. My work is a combination of art and science. You can teach somebody figures, statistics and angles, but ultimately you need to have an aesthetic eye and an appreciation for beauty. That’s what I like about it — it’s creative as well.

My original training was in cardio-thoracic, or heart and lung surgery, but I didn’t want to do that indefinitely. I always wanted to try something new, something different. I started doing injectable aesthetic treatments and then realised that there was a lot of opportunity to do pioneering things in this field.

Mostly my work involves procedures that require local anaesthesia and injections — Botox, fillers, laser treatments and thread-lift facelifts. It’s all office-based
