Tourism officials have insisted that Ireland is a safe holiday destination after the Australian government warned its citizens of possible civil disorder and increasing tensions between republicans and unionists.

A spokesman for the Department of Tourism said that he would not comment directly on the travel advice but said: “When compared to the number of tourists entering the country, Ireland is a very safe destination and the rate of crime against tourists is quite low.

“Research has shown that the vast majority of our overseas visitors are more than happy to subsequently recommend Ireland as a holiday destination”.
