Trapped at Laban, SE8

Maresa von Stockert is fascinated by props and how the mechanics of the body influence human behaviour. These twin preoccupations infiltrate every aspect of the German-born choreographer’s latest piece of dance-theatre for her Tilted Productions.

The performance is both satirical and cautionary in tone. The actual rendition of the title is TrAPPED, a signal that Von Stockert’s dual subjects are social imprisonment and wire-tapping as practised, it is clearly implied, by the Stasi of East Germany. Of course, the reach of her socio-political observations is applicable to a wider world, including contemporary surveillance culture. The bigger issue is what new insights does this precisely crafted but sometimes sluggishly paced work bring to our understanding of such invasive situations?
