UK’s ignorance of the Russian mind

If the UK Government had not refused to disclose written evidence against Andrei Loguvoy, the Kremlin might have reacted differently

Sir, Lecturing Russia on human rights and the rule of law will get the UK nowhere (“Forget about Litvinenko, says Russia as Cameron arrives in Moscow to drum up business”, Sept 12). Perhaps if the UK Government had not refused to disclose the written evidence against Andrei Lugovoy to the Russian state, the Kremlin might have reacted differently to our request for his appearance in a British court. Why did the British Government refuse to hand over the file? They were happy enough to hand over so-called Libyan dissidents’ names and addresses living in the UK to Gaddafi’s henchmen. These inconsistencies in UK legal and human rights policy are noted by foreign governments, including the Russian.
