US space shuttle Discovery begins mission to deliver research lab

Cape Canaveral

The US space shuttle Discovery blasts across the sky above Florida. Its crew of seven astronauts are due to dock at the International Space Station today as part of a 14-day mission to deliver a research laboratory.

The crew will attach the pressure module of the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency to the space station during three space walks. When it is in place the module, named Kibo, Japanese for hope, will be the largest room in the space station, providing space for four scientists to work in. A 10m (33ft) robotic arm will be attached to it.

The installation will be overseen by Akihiko Hoshide, the only Japanese crew member on Discovery.

Engineers will examine footage of the launch from the Kennedy Space
