Warren Gatland, the Wales coach, has named George North at outside centre for the Rugby World Cup game against Australia on Saturday as he attempts to drag an injury-ravaged side through as winners of pool A.

North, who missed the end of last season due to repeated concussions, lines up alongside Jamie Roberts in a line-up showing six changes from the draining defeat of Fiji seven days ago at the Millennium Stadium.

The Northampton Saints player does have experience playing the position against Australia, however, having lined up outside Roberts last autumn in the absence of Jonathan Davies as Wales continued a dire recent record against the Wallabies, losing 33-28.
