Watford confirm Malky Mackay as Brendan Rodgers’s managerial successor

Malky Mackay has been confirmed as the new manager of Watford on a three-year contract. The 37-year-old replaces Brendan Rodgers, who left this month after only half a season at Vicarage Road to take charge of Reading.

A Watford statement described the former Celtic, Watford, West Ham United, Norwich City and Scotland defender as “the outstanding candidate after the club received around 50 quality applications for the vacant post” and praised his “in-depth understanding of the requirements of the league”.

Mackay began coaching during the 2006-07 season and had five games as caretaker manager last November when Adrian Boothroyd parted company with the club, winning two.

Graham Taylor, the former Watford and England manager, was on the club’s selection committee. “Malky has all the attributes
