Weather Eye: rain, hurricanes and heatwaves

The weather at the Olympics in London turned warm and sunny as high pressure settled over the entire UK. This was the first time an anticyclone has covered the whole country this summer, in what was a thoroughly wet June and first half of July. However, conditions are expected to return to a more unsettled weather pattern this week.

Elsewhere in the world tropical storms have erupted with devastating effect. Two typhoons passed near the Philippines in quick succession, and although neither storm made a direct hit on the country they both boosted the seasonal monsoon rains by drawing in warm moist air and beefing up massive rainclouds. As a result, Manila was battered by a deluge of rain that fell non-stop for three days
