The words used as the title of this four-part documentary were first deployed by Kurtz, the antihero of Joseph Conrad’s 1899 novel Heart of Darkness. Once considered a canonical text in English literature, Conrad’s exploration of troubling European ventures into the so-called dark continent is now often criticised for its failure to account for the African experience of colonialism.
