Why cultural diplomacy in eastern Europe is vital for future peace

A month before the Nato summit, to be held in Vilnius, Lithuania, in July there will be a model Nato summit, in which schools participate in a simulation of the event. Lithuania has had a complex and tragic history of Soviet occupation and the country is determined about its geopolitical direction, which lies with Nato and in Europe. Therefore, its young people need to understand democratic values more than ever.

The words flash up on a municipal building in Vilnius: “Putin, the Hague is waiting for you.” A Nato air display streaks across the sky.

In The Times recently, William Hague wrote that “we should be asking leaders from the Baltic states and eastern Europe to take democracy’s arguments on tour.”
