A woman who was raped and beaten with a hammer by her husband has said she thought she was going to be murdered in front of her four-year-old son.

The man was convicted last month of raping his wife in the family home in May 2014 as their son slept downstairs. He was also convicted of threatening to cut her face and threatening to kill the woman the day after he had raped her.

The conviction two years ago was only the third successful prosecution of marital rape since it was made illegal in 1990.

The 42-year-old man had already admitted attacking his wife and her mother with a hammer outside her mother’s home in August 2014. The woman, from Dublin, read her victim impact
