We need to work together to make our modern-day NSPCC more effective

Sir, While we recognise the trust and confidence in the NSPCC that Mr Horwill suggests in his letter (Jan 22), the world has moved on. The task is far bigger and more complex than in the 1950s, when, for example, we were almost completely unaware of the extent of sexual or emotional abuse. Today the “front line” responsibility for investigating abuse is rightly shared between state-funded agencies with the lead responsibility being carried by local authorities and the police. The NSPCC does not support any suggestions to change this arrangement but it is acutely aware that recent events demonstrate that there remains much to do to enhance child-protection measures across the UK.
