Wormald’s Week: end of spring; broadbeans; coriander

- The fading leaves of spring-flowering bulbs that have been naturalised in grass can be cut down and removed, as long as it is at least six weeks since the plants finished flowering. Use a lawn mower, strimmer or a pair of sharp shears. If the bulbs were late flowering and only finished their display a few weeks ago, resist the temptation to cut back the leaves too early, or they are likely to produce a poor show next spring. This is because the leaves help to build up food reserves in the bulbs for the following season's display. Once you have cut them back, the area underneath will appear pale and yellow, but the grass will soon recover and turn green again.
