Jim Gamble, the former head of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre, broke his silence in The Times. I found Mr Gamble’s comment — about “saving face rather than saving children” — highly disturbing.

On the shootings in Tucson, Arizona, the paper recalled how last year, after voting for the President’s healthcare reform, Gabrielle Giffords became a prime target for the Right. Her Tea Party opponent, Jesse Kelly, offered supporters the chance to fire off a real gun with the words: “Help remove Gabrielle Giffords from office.” How chilling was that? It would have been good to know what American public reaction was when that happened.
