It is easy enough to complain to a shop if its customer services is lacking or your item is faulty, but how do you tackle a confrontation with a local trader that has accidentally or carelessly damaged your possessions when they were in their care? Times Money explores your options.

What the law states

The Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982 covers you for all work carried out and products supplied by tradesman and professionals delivering you a service. This includes everyone from builders, plumbers and dentists to restaurants, hairdressers and mechanics.

The law states that any work must be carried out using “reasonable care and skill” within a reasonable time and for a reasonable price. If you can argue that this has not
