Sinn Féin

Sinn Féin is a left-wing Irish republican party in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland which aims to create a united Ireland. The party has historically had ties to republican paramilitary groups and was associated with the IRA during the Troubles. Today both groups emphasise they stand separate from one another and the party was involved in the Northern Ireland peace process during the 1990s. Its current leader is Mary Lou McDonald and it is the largest party in the Northern Ireland Assembly in a power-sharing agreement with the Democratic Unionist Party. It also advocates the creation of social housing, an “All-Ireland” health service, extending same-sex marriage to Northern Ireland and banning conversion therapy.
