Can you be more specific, what's the difference with ordinal numeral (Q923933)? --Infovarius (talk) 19:25, 28 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

ordinal numeral (Q923933) - "en:In linguistics,...". ordinal number (Q191780) - "en:In set theory, ...". --Fractaler (talk) 14:37, 29 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I have invented the Danish word "ordinaltalord" (ordinal number word) for the label to distinguish between the concepts. — Finn Årup Nielsen (fnielsen) (talk) 10:03, 16 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Number vs numeral

[edit]

@Infovarius: If ordinal number (Q191780) is the mathematical concept, and ordinal numeral (Q923933) the linguistic one, why is the English adjective third (L14411) linked in the following way?

I believe this isn't an exception, but that all ordinal lexemes are linked to ordinal numeral (Q923933) (as they should), while the corresponding Wikibase items are linked to ordinal number (Q191780) (which I think is wrong). Can anyone clarify what it should look like?

In case somebody sets up a script (I have no experience with scripts myself) to change things across the entire range of ordinal numbers/numerals, I'd like to suggest also deleting the series ordinal (P1545) main statement (as that property is only allowed as a qualifier) from each ordinal, while replacing

The natural number item can still be found via based on (P144), so it won't completely disappear from the ordinal item.

The English-language descriptions could use some rewording as well ("number" -> "numeral") for consistency with the instance of (P31) statements. But I have no idea who depends on what statements here. SM5POR (talk) 16:53, 20 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Or maybe I am mistaken, and this is the distinction between the word and the thing that I have been looking for all the time? Better put that script on hold then... SM5POR (talk) 17:00, 20 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, this is "word vs. entity" thing. I agree with removing P1545 but not with replacing Q191780 with Q923933. --Infovarius (talk) 10:54, 21 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
