Last pieces of Maidenhead’s famous Carters Steam Fair go on sale

Joby Carter

The last vintage fairground rides and vehicles from the Carters Steam Fair are set to go on sale at an auction next month.

Each exhibit, from the historic carousel to the swinging boat, will be on show at a series of open days at Carters Yard in White Waltham from Wednesday 12 to June 16.

Carters Steam Fair held its final tour in 2022 having been a popular event in Maidenhead for decades.

Carters Steam Fair owner Joby Carter said:“We’re in the final phase of relocating the rides and vintage vehicles to new owners.”

“We’ve already sold three of our big rides and all of the smaller rides and sidestalls: we have found them new homes that we’re really happy with.

“Everything is going out in pristine condition that I’m proud to put my name to.”

Up for sale are rides including the Lightning Skid, Gallopers and Steam Yachts, as well as vintage vehicles.

And each one has been restored to its original glory.

“The Ark had all the platforms repainted and hinges replaced, the Chair O Plane had the steps repainted, the rounding boards on the Toytown ride were repainted too,” said Joby.

“From small repairs and replacement parts to updated artwork featuring the new owner’s names, we’ve taken care of it all for the new owners so it all looks pristine.”

On Saturday, visitors have been invite to take part in an auction of fairground art and hand painted signs.

The following day, between 10am and 4pm, Joby will host a free signwriting event to showcase the traditional art of hand painting fairground signs.

“This next phase has three of our famous rides and some vintage vehicles that weren't previously for sale,” Joby said.

“We are currently restoring two of the lorries and they're being sold into preservation with our name on it.”

For fairground enthusiasts, there are also ‘bargains’ on offer as part of the sale.

Joby said: “We want to find the right homes for everything. I’ve got too much stuff to mention, there's bargains to be had.”

Carters Steam Fair open days are free to the public from Friday till Sunday (June 16).
