It goes without saying that any stage production is a team effort, from those in the spotlight and those behind the drapes. This warm and captivating production of ‘Gypsy’ from the East Berkshire Operatic Society, shows what a great team they have.

A strong cast of young and forever young performers brought the true rags to no rags story of vaudeville burlesque dancer, Gypsy Rose Lee, to life in this show based on her memoirs and with music and lyrics from musical giants, Jules Styne and Stephan Sondheim.

Under the consummate direction of Stuart Hayllor, the audience was taken back to the time when while American vaudeville was on its knees, the show still had to go on.

And go on it did, with EBOS doing what they do best creating an adaptation of a story of hope over adversity and ambition over love, all wrapped up in an atmosphere of feel goodness and stand out set pieces that brings Broadway to Bracknell.

There are so many members of the production I could congratulate, but as I said this was a standout team effort of wonderful talent, so all deserve the plaudits, but on this occasion, I must make an exception and pick out one individual.

Playing the ultimate ‘Pushy Showbiz Mother’, Laura Thain’s performance as Mama Rose, was extraordinarily brilliant! With a powerful singing voice that could both gently soothe and belt out classics such as ‘Everything’s Coming Up Roses’ magnificently, and in the case of that song, with such pent up jealously and venom, also showcased her enviable acting abilities.

Once again EBOS has put on a memorable, enjoyable and high-quality show that lets them entertain you.
