MAYFIELD, KY — December 10, 2021 is a date that brings back memories of sadness and loss for many. 2 years ago, multiple areas were hit by a historic tornado, killing dozens of people across multiple states.

As the anniversary approaches, the City of Mayfield is planning to come together again for a memorial walk to share memories and support. This year's walk is called Memorial Walk: A New Beginning.

To organizers, events like the walks represent hope. Two years later, they also want to honor those who were lost while also looking into the future.

In Mayfield, the impacts of an EF-4 tornado are still felt.

Graves County Emergency Management Director, Tracy Warner, said she remembers the night of December 10, 2021.

"That night was — it was pretty awful, just because you didn't know the destruction. Because it was night you didn't have an overview of what was going on," said Warner.

Events like the upcoming walk give her happy memories and hope.

"The walk just reminds us that we can do anything together, and we're gonna come back stronger and better," said Warner.

The walk will begin at the old candle factory location and end at the monument.

David Elliott is the former Area 1 Manager for Kentucky Emergency Management. He said remembering those who lost their lives is important and so is honoring first responders.

"This walk is about honoring first responders and that night we lost Robert Daniel who was one of our jail deputies.... No greater love," said Elliott.

Just like last year, organizers are asking the community to come out to the walk.

"Just to support everybody and just know that we're still in this together you know...also remembering the ones that we lost," said Warner.

Those who would like to participate can RSVP here.

The walk will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, but participants are asked to arrive at 8-8:30 a.m. Those who attend are also asked to bring an American flag or Kentucky's state flag
