- Ein Brandabschnitt ist ein baulich abgegrenzter Bereich, der im Schadensfall (Brandfall) bestimmungsgemäß ausbrennt und somit keinen Feuerüberschlag auf andere Brandabschnitte zulassen darf. Die Brandausbreitung auf angrenzende Abschnitte wird durch feuerbeständige Bauteile verhindert. Im Allgemeinen umfasst ein Brandabschnitt alle Geschosse eines Gebäudes und wird direkt von oben bis nach unten durchgezogen (im Beispielbild die Trennung zwischen BA I und BA II). Unter bestimmten Voraussetzungen dürfen Brandabschnitte auch versetzt gebildet werden (im Beispielbild die Trennung zwischen BA II und BA III), jedoch müssen dann die Decken zwischen den versetzten Brandwänden feuerbeständig sein, um einen Feuerüberschlag zu verhindern. Aus demselben Grund müssen Fenster in der Nähe der Brandabschnitttrennungen feuerhemmend ausgeführt werden. (de)

* continuity of operations The construction of such compartments and all their components is a matter of systems within systems, which use bounding to achieve fire-resistance ratings, all interdependent, forming part of an overall fire safety plan. - Brandcompartimentering is het onderverdelen van een gebouw in brandcompartimenten door middel van , om zo branddoorslag c.q. brandoverslag van het ene compartiment naar het andere tegen te gaan. Tevens worden op deze manier vluchtwegen gemaakt, waarlangs de aanwezige mensen het gebouw tijdig kunnen verlaten. In Nederland is in het Bouwbesluit 2012 vastgelegd hoe groot deze compartimenten dienen te zijn, welke brandwerendheid de wanden en deuren moeten hebben. In België is er het koninklijk besluit van 7 juli 1994 tot vaststelling van de basisnormen voor de preventie van brand en ontploffing waaraan de nieuwe gebouwen moeten voldoen.
