Oswald Pereira

[edit]

Born in Thane, Maharashtra, Oswald Pereira recalls how he had to shout to be heard at home...because he was one among seven siblings vying for attention from his parents. But this ignited the spirit of competition and the instinct to fight his way through life. His father, an engineer, wanted him to be a doctor. So he enrolled in the science stream at St Xavier's College, Mumbai. In a few months, he abandoned science, and opted for humanities in the next academic year. After graduation, he tried various jobs, including a salesman and storekeeper, before he virtually drifted into journalism. That, however, seemed the right profession for him.

He began his career with the Free Press Journal in Mumbai and since then has worked for other leading Indian publications including the Times of India, Outlook and Financial Express. He was among the founding team of Outlook. He has also been editor of niche publications on infrastructure and defence. Oswald has been on the visiting faculty of the Times of India School of Journalism.

Later on in his career, he turned to fiction. His debut novel, Beyond the Newsroom, was published in January 2007. The novel describes the unholy alliance between the media, the mafia and governance.

He has completed writing his second novel. Called Revenge of the Naked Princess, the novel captures the dark age of forced religious conversions in India in the 16th century. The novel is still to be published.

Oswald has appeared on Indian national television and is an amateur actor. He nurtures his passion for singing light Hindi vocals, training under a professional teacher.
