You may know her as Helena from the film ‘Jawan’, but Sanjeeta Bhattacharya is much more than just an actress. She’s a talented singer and songwriter, now making a strong return to the indie music scene with her latest single, ‘Ratiyaan’. The song is available on all platforms.
Through ‘Ratiyaan’, Sanjeeta pays tribute to her Indian Classical roots. She infuses Indian classical music with contemporary pop and afrobeat-inspired rhythms, creating a unique fusion.
Produced by Karan Pandav, the track is written and composed by her in Hindi, Urdu, and Punjabi, reflecting the linguistic diversity of her upbringing in Delhi. “Ratiyaan speaks of a love that you are too nervous to express but it consumes you and leaves you sleepless, longing for their presence,” she said.
Her previous songs had a mellow vibe, but ‘Ratiyaan’, her debut Hindi track, is more upbeat, inviting listeners to dance. What inspired this shift? “A lot of that has to do with my newfound fascination for afrobeat. I wanted to create music that I have fun playing and dancing to while performing live,” said Sanjeeta, a Berklee College of Music graduate who has performed at festivals like the Panama Jazz Festival, Hornbill Festival, and NH7 Weekender.
Sanjeeta, known for her tribute performance to A R Rahman at Berklee College of Music in 2014, wanted to create something that reflects her heritage and life journey. “Ratiyaan is a journey through my musical heritage and contemporary influences,” she said. Rahman praised her indie folk song, ‘Watercolour’.
Known for blending R&B, Indie folk, and Latin influences with multi-lingual lyrics, Sanjeeta aims to create songs that tell personal stories. With ‘Ratiyaan’, she introduces a fresh era of music, hoping the audience will enjoy it. “I’ve had a lot of fun making Ratiyaan. I hope it reaches a wider audience and gets featured in a film,” she said.
After listening to her song 'Pensarte', 'Jawan' director Atlee Kumar gave Sanjeeta a break as a singer and songwriter in the film. In 'Jawan', Sanjeeta wrote and sang 'Mis Chicas', composed by music director Anirudh.
