The board controls and supervises the secondary education system in the state of Karnataka. Further there are some open and private boards like Karnataka State Open Education Examination Board also running in the state, which are independent from KSEAB.

In October 2022, it was announced to change the name of Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board (KSEEB) to Karnataka School Examination and Assessment (KSEAB).
