Ganga Dussehra holds a great religious and spiritual significance among Hindus.This day is considered an auspicious day to honour Goddess Ganga. According to Hindu Scriptures, it is believed that on Dashami Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha Goddess Ganga descended on this earth. Devotees across the country celebrate this festival with great enthusiasm and happiness. They offer prayers to Goddess Ganga and seek blessings.
Ganga Dussehra is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Maa Ganga and also known as the Avataran day of Goddess Ganga. Maa Ganga is known by various names such as Shubhra, Bhagirathi, Mandakini, Shivapriya and Jahnavi. She is considered as the living Goddess who is still present on earth in the form of Ganga Jal and clean the sins of devotees and make their soul mind and body pure and pious.
It is believed that the one who takes a holy dip in Ganga water, get relieved from all types of sufferings and negativity. Maa Ganga bless the devotees with purity and they can also get rid of their past committed sins. Maa Ganga also help people to get salvation after death.
As per Hindu Scriptures, once sage Bhagirathi strictly penanced to Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva to send Ganga on earth so that his ancestors could be released from the curse and attain salvation. Lord Brahma asked him to perform penance to please Lord Shiva as only he could control the flow of Ganga otherwise it could be destructive so he performed the same. Goddess Ganga then emerged from the foot of Lord Vishnu then Lord Shiva first gave place to Ganga in his hair and then released the flow of Ganga.
