Gujrat - In Gujarat, Makar Sankranti is observed as Uttarayan. It falls on the Vad Satam of Posh in the Gujarati calendar. They make candies to give to friends and family and fly kites.
Uttar Pardesh - The celebration is known as Khichdi, or Kitcheri, in Uttar Pradesh. They make Khichdi as a special meal, which they first offer to the Lord before serving to the entire family.

Tamil Nadu - Makar Sankranti is observed as the Pongal festival in Tamil Nadu. On the eve of Pongal, Bhagi, bonfires are lit. The Tamil calendar states that Pongal is a four-day holiday, with celebrations beginning on January 15 and ending on January 18.
