Keir Starmer: The Biography Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER

‘Required reading for anyone who has an interest in who governs Britain' ALASTAIR CAMPBELL

'This will be the most important political book of the year’ MATTHEW D’ANCONA, EVENING STANDARD

'The first serious and consistently readable biography of Starmer…It is a wonder that he has said so much to Baldwin' PATRICK MAGUIRE, THE TIMES

This authoritative – but not authorised – biography by Tom Baldwin provides answers by drawing deeply on many hours of interviews with the Labour leader himself, as well as unprecedented access to members of his family, his oldest friends and closest colleagues.

Together, they tell an unexpectedly intimate story filled with feelings of grief and love that has driven him on more than any rigid ideology or loyalty to a particular faction.

The book tracks Starmer’s emergence from a troubled small town background and rebellious youth, through a storied legal career as a human rights barrister and the country’s chief prosecutor, to becoming an MP relatively late in life.

Baldwin provides a vivid and compelling account of how this untypical politician then rose to be leader of his party in succession to Jeremy Corbyn, then transformed it with a ruthless rapidity that has enraged opponents from the left just as much as it has bewildered those on the right.

Above all, this is a book that should be read by anyone who wants to understand how someone who has too often been underestimated or dismissed as dull, now intends to change Britain.

'This is an absolutely riveting and very timely biography' AMOL RAJAN

‘Highly readable… Baldwin has peeled back more layers than anyone else' ROBERT SHRIMSLEY, FINANCIAL TIMES

‘Tom Baldwin’s portrait is off a tough, conscientious, and kindly man with the right values' ANDREW MARR, NEW STATESMAN

PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio.

Review

'As well as being very well written, Baldwin obtained considerable access and he presents a compelling picture of what Starmer is like, and in particular how he was brought up. If you admire Starmer, you should definitely read it. And if you don’t like him, you should read it anyway, because he could be PM for the next 10 years and it may be a very long time before anyone produces a better or fairer account of what makes him tick'

ANDREW SPARROW, GUARDIAN

'It tells us much we need to know about the man who will be prime minister… The access is so comprehensive and his subject so uncharacteristically candid that exploring this private world can almost feel prurient… At times it is unclear whether Starmer grasps the significance of what he has done in cooperating with this biography’

PATRICK MAGUIRE, THE TIMES

'This story, told with sensitivity and simplicity, offers readers an insight into the question voters across Britain will ask this year: who really is our possible next prime minister? The picture painted of Sir Keir’s motivations and make-up is skillfully done, with all the nuance kept in; [it will] engage any reader hoping to understand the man who may be running Britain come the end of the year'

BEN RILEY-SMITH, DAILY TELEGRAPH

‘A fair minded, unflashy biography…[of] our next serious Prime Minister. Watch this space. Attlee may have some competition’

ROBERT MCCRUM, INDEPENDENT

‘A highly informative, illuminating and insightful biography… the most complete portrait we have yet been offered’

The man who changed public prosecutions and now Labour forever

The man who changed public prosecutions and now Labour forever
I just finished Keir Starmer The Biography by Tom Baldwin. It was really great! What I found surprising is how loyal his friends outside politics genuinely are. They all see him as personable and the life & soul of the party, but in his political career, you get the sense of an individual who is on the outside of the factional war often attributed to Labour, who is a technocrat hellbent on bringing us closer to Europe (not necessarily in Europe - one of the paradoxes of Starmer’s ideology), and someone whose ruthlessness on the front of ‘antisemitism’ both helped his polling, and, in recent times as we know, brought the party’s rating to a standstill with the war in the Middle East. What I get from the book is that he is exceptionally fastidious, thanks to his routes in law, and his winning attitude from his love of football five-to-sides that goes out with the populist electorate his predecessor cultivated, but he has proven to be the most unpolitical politician to be within reaching distance of No. 10. So, it is definitely a great book for learning about ‘Mr Boring’ and ‘No Drama Starmer’. Someone who the right believes goes too hard on the non-dom status the Tories champion, and desire to win over all the Red Wall constituencies, and who the left thinks is a traitor, and someone that Owen Jones once said we should all trust in 2020 and who he was personally friendly with, but who now, in 2024, says is dishonest and duplicitous with an aim to ‘permanently eradicate the left’.But this is someone who doesn’t take his chances lightly, who wants to get the Green energy companies on side, and to develop far more properties than Tories have, and intends to if he gets in for two terms, meaning he is incredibly ambition driven. He is someone who thinks of Labour as far removed from himself, even if it is impossible for that to be the case. The man who, for all his controversies, is seen by many as the most ‘grown up’ politician we have had in years. Interestingly, despite him and Corbyn’s many differences, and Starmer’s aggressive reshuffling approach that is indiscriminate for the most part, both parties have never disparaged each other with childish insults. Unlike Starmer with Boris Johnson and Johnson with Starmer where the gloves were on, and pleasantries dispensed with. The book explores the nuances, childhood experiences, friendly relationships, law career, work as DPP, family relations and the way he moved up the ranks in Labour, and what that could mean from Britain from an impartial author, who clearly has respect for the man he got to know while writing this book, even if he doesn’t agree with everything Keir says or does. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in the path Britain could take sooner than later.

I have met Keir Starmer and the man I met (before he was Labour Leader) is the man in this book. So worth a read. - and I'm fussy about what I read.

Bought this and found it to be a gripping read, full of unexpected detail - really fills in the background of this man - he turns out to be someone with a moving past and someone I think most of the country will respect, if not admire. The book is fast moving and compellingly written, full of insight and illumination. Well worth the money!

I have been watching Keir Starmer but have never been able to describe who he is or what he stands for in a sentence or two. I now know why. This book describes a unique man who is driven by a desire to serve using intelligence and whatever tools are most appropriate for the task in hand. Not left enough, nor right enough, nor exciting enough, yet so focused on outcomes that he remains too difficult to describe in a few sentences - which now seems a bonus. I learned so much from this excellent book.

A well presented biography
Starmer has many characteristics which would I think make him a a good prime minister he appears to be hard working and has many traits that would be good in domestic and international politics due to his time a human rights Barrister and the Director of Public Prosecutions he appears also to be well organised

I have found Starmer a frustrating leader of the opposition, but having read this well-observed and thorough book I am convinced that he will be a genuinely brilliant PM. His slightly odd upbringing, his difficult relationship with his father, his superhuman self discipline and work ethic, and his deeply held public service values all combine to make a man who is more bureaucrat than politician. He is a fixer not a dreamer, not a creature of the terminally factional Labour Party - and thats a good thing. Bring on the election!
