The U.S. Department of Labor Job Corps program is turning 60 years old. There are thousands of Job Corps success stories and Aleut supports three Job Corps campuses. One of them, the Paul Simon Chicago Job Corps Campus, is the epicenter of opportunity for one new Aleut hire.   Max Tracy Jr. found the Job Corps program after leaving high school at age 16. Originally from Colorado, he had moved to Nebraska and struggled to fit into the local community. His mother found the Job Corps program and after speaking to a Job Corps recruiter in 2018, he decided to pursue the computer services technology training in residency at the Chicago campus.   The COVID pandemic in 2020 stalled his progress in achieving his high school diploma and his certification in the computer service technology program. The COVID closure of all Job Corps campuses forced him to return to Nebraska, where he began a distance learning Job Corps program for pharmacy technician. Once Tracy was able to the return to campus under quarantine in late 2020, he obtained his high school diploma, completed the pharmacy technician program in 2022, and switched to the college track program. Upon graduation from Job Corps, he returned to Nebraska to begin a career in telecommunications and supporting networks and configuration.   But Chicago and Job Corps was still on his mind, and Tracy returned to the Chicago campus in January 2023 as an employee. While searching for a way to stand out and to serve students, he began a no charge electronic repair services program for students. The program has been so successful that it caught the attention of the Department of Labor, Aleut, and Senior Vice president Geoff Vaughan, who Tracy said advocated for his hiring into the Aleut IT department as a Service Desk Technician. His first day as an Aleut employee was June 10, 2024.   Paul Simon Chicago Job Corps Campus Director William (Bill) Otter Otter is also excited to see Tracy’s career taking off and the potential it shows for the future of technology education opportunities for other Job Corps students. "Max is a great example of the students we serve at Job Corps campuses. I’m excited that he has this opportunity and has started his IT career with Aleut," Otter said.   “The Job Corps Computer Service Technology training program was an absolute life-changer” Tracy said. He noted that few Job Corps campus’ offer technology training programs but that the diversity of career opportunities such programs offer from desk support like his new role, data entry, or direct support on government contracts can open doors students’ may not have realized were available to them.   Tracy has come a long way from 16 to 21 and he is continuing to give back as a volunteer to the program that gave him such a tremendous opportunity. Montgomery Job Corps students visited the Jordan Hydroelectric Dam hosted by Alabama Power Company. This partnership has provided multiple internships opportunities to MJCC students within a sixth month timeframe since establishing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). During the tour, students were given demonstrations on how Alabama Power Company controls the levels and flows of the dams which creates a source of power. Students also learned the importance of having the ability to listen, be alert, follow all safety guidelines, as well as the importance of team building with colleagues. The field trip was a successful and fulfilling experience that expanded students horizons! . . A former Treasure Island Job Corps graduate visited the campus recently to present on his upstart baking program. Free training and job placement is provided for aspiring bakers/pastry chefs. Over 20 Treasure Island Job Corps student culinary trainees were in attendance. The Bread Project is now responsible for about 4 Bay Area startups and hosts the kitchen space for dozens more. . .
