ECE Professor Luke Mawst; Assistant Professors Shubhra S. Pasayat, Chirag Gupta, and Joseph Andrews; and Associate Professor Andreas Velten are investigators for three projects that have received Research Forward awards from the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. The projects range from semiconductor materials that could create high-efficiency LEDs and lasers, to sensors that monitor repetitive head impacts in youth, to single-photon quanta sensors that could increase the speed and accuracy of quantum computing. Computer engineering senior Colin Peck (left) found inspiration from the loss of his brother to help others. When Brian Peck (right), a UW–Madison junior studying biomedical engineering, tragically passed away in 2019 from cardiac arrest, he was planning to begin an internship at Medtronic, a healthcare technology company. Now, Colin is carrying forward his brother's legacy as an intern with the same company in the cardiac rhythm management operating unit. Titled, 𝘚𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘉𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘔𝘰𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘴: 𝘔𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘋𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘭 𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘥𝘴, the thesis aims to make it possible to levitate bearingless motors without displacement sensor feedback by exploiting inductance variation in the motor winding. ECE & ME Assistant Professor Joseph Andrews and his team have developed a printed sensor to economically measure nitrates in soil. This technology would allow farmers to dispense a more precise amount of fertilizer which could reduce both material costs and the harmful effects of nitrates leaching into groundwater. Congratulations to UW–Madison's WiscWind team as its proposal for a 525-megawatt floating wind farm on Lake Michigan won the project development contest in the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2024 Collegiate Wind Competition. The competition asked teams of undergraduates to develop a wind energy project and design, build, and test a model wind turbine.
