A dangerous driver who tried to evade police in Slough by going on the wrong side of the road and ignoring red lights has been jailed for 26 weeks.

Police spotted Arfan Bashir, of Castle Hill Drive, Manchester, driving a stolen Abarth car in Woodland Avenue on June 15.

The 41-year-old failed to stop for officers and sped off, driving on the wrong side of the road and going through red lights at busy junctions.

Footage released by police showed fellow drivers having to take evasive action to avoid being crashed into.

Bashir thought he had escaped but an officer managed to track him down following help from members of the public.

Armed with a taser, the officer ordered the Manchester man to the floor and arrested him.

Bashir was found to have a Stanley knife in his possession and was already disqualified from driving. He also failed a roadside drugs wipe.

Two days later, Bashir appeared at Reading Magistrates’ Court where he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, failing to stop for police and driving while disqualified.

He also admitted failing to provide a specimen for analysis, possession of a bladed article in public and handling stolen goods.

Bashir received a 26-week prison sentence and was disqualified from driving for three years and 10 months.

Investigating officer PC Matthew Ames-White, of the Joint Operations Roads Policing Unit said: “Arfan Bashir drove extremely dangerously around Slough town centre on a Saturday afternoon in a stolen car while over the drug-driving limit and without a licence.

“Bashir’s driving was reckless and it is fortunate no one was hurt and nothing was damaged as a result, although some other drivers had to take sudden evasive action to avoid a collision.

“We will never allow dangerous driving on our patch to go unpunished so we will always pursue offenders where safe, and bring them to justice.”
