It’s funny how sometimes a lipstick — that most obvious, unignorable manifestation of make-up — can look and feel unlipsticky. I’m not just talking about nude or especially discreet colours. I was surprised recently to realise it can also apply to reds. At the risk of repeating myself, there is nothing I like more than a bare (or bare-seeming) face and matte red lips. I’ve been saying this for so long now, regardless of fashion, that its moment has come round again: matte red lips are everywhere, looking modern and fresh and not too try-hard.
It’s a look that, rightly or wrongly (rightly, I think), I associate with Paris. The matte red lips and bare face, ideally with the addition of perfect-but-messy hair, is the
