“He was like my best friend.” Horse killed, high schooler injured during hit-and-run in West Point

A high school student in Clay County was hurt when he and his horse were struck by a hit-and-run driver Monday night.

WEST POINT, Miss. (WTVA) – A high school student in Clay County was hurt when he and his horse were struck by a hit-and-run driver Monday night.

The incident took place on Waverly Road near West Point.

Boone and his owner Reco Collins were a dynamic duo, competing in relay races and roping.

Collins said Boone was very special to him, adding that he cannot believe he is gone.

“Me and Boone, when I got him we just clicked. He was like my best friend,” Collins said. “On the first day, I just remember he came up right to me and put his head on my shoulder and I knew he was the one.”

Collins was riding Boone back to the barn when a truck swerved off the road and hit them.

Collins was thrown off of Boone, suffering a concussion and a hurt neck, back, and wrist.

Boone's injuries were so severe that he had to be put down.

Collins said he misses his best friend.

“I’m trying to look at the bigger picture, the brighter side about it,” Collins said. “Everything happens for a reason. So, more blessings are on the way.”

The Clay County Sheriff's Office is investigating the hit-and-run.

Deputies are looking for the driver of a red truck with a missing mirror and damage to the front of the vehicle.
