New laws taking effect in Mississippi on July 1, 2024

JACKSON, Miss. (WTVA) – Several new laws are taking effect in Mississippi on Monday. 

The David R. Huggins Act will put both the Mississippi Highway Patrol and Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics employees on a pay scale based on rank.

Walker’s Law – named after a Starkville teen who took his life – will also be taking effect. 

This law creates a criminal offense for sextortion and aggravated sexual extortion.

It goes on to add that a person convicted of sexual extortion shall be imprisoned:

  • Not more than five (5) years for a first offense
  • Not more than ten (10) years for a second offense
  • Not more than fifteen (15) years for a third or subsequent offense

A law on squatted vehicles will also go into effect.

House Bill 0349 bans vehicles with front fenders that are four or more inches higher than rear fenders.

More than 300 bills were signed by the governor during the last legislative session.

This includes:

  • House Bill 0903, criminalizes possession of machine gun conversion kits.
  • Senate Bill 2339 allows high schoolers to take sign language as a foreign language.
  • The “SAFER Act requires public education buildings to have exclusively male and female bathrooms and changing areas, as well as requires fraternities and sororities to do the same for housing.
